Who is Dr. Séverine Mazur
Visit Dr. Séverine Mazur has been practicing medicine for over 30 years. After obtaining her MD from the Université Jules Verne in Amiens, France, in 1997, she practiced in both emergency and general medicine, developing solid clinical expertise.
She then specialized in obesity management, Today, the company offers a highly personalized approach, focused on the real needs of each patient and geared towards lasting results.
Training and expertise
Dr. Mazur has enriched her initial medical training with several programs specializing in the pillars of obesity treatment. She completed nutrition training at Stanford University, the Harvard Obesity Medicine course, and the ASCEND program at the World Obesity Training Center in Moncton.
She has also recently completed advanced training in Ericksonian hypnosis, a therapeutic approach recognized for its effectiveness in psychological support. This additional skill enables her to integrate tools for stress management, motivation enhancement and improved eating habits into her patient care.
She also had the privilege of being mentored by an endocrinologist specializing in the treatment of obesity in Toronto, and of observing various types of bariatric surgery, which sharpened her critical and global approach to the treatment of this disease.
Patient-centered approach
Passionate about the psychological, mental and physical dimensions of health, Dr. Mazur trained in neuro-linguistic programming (NLP*) to better support her patients psychologically.
As previously mentioned, she has also completed high-level training in Ericksonian hypnosis, an approach recognized for its effectiveness in therapeutic support. This additional skill enables her to offer complementary help to patients, particularly in the area of weight management.
Indeed, under medical supervision, Ericksonian hypnosis can play a beneficial role in boosting motivation, promoting control of eating behaviors and reducing stress, thus contributing to a sustainable and well-supervised weight loss process.
*Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is an approach to communication and personal development that aims to understand and modify patterns of thought, behavior and language to achieve specific goals and improve well-being.
Recent innovation
One of his most recent training courses is certification for the placement of Allurion® gastric balloons (see next section on this page), an innovation in the treatment of obesity.
Commitment during the pandemic
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Mazur directed the Family Medicine Group in the Sillery sector of Quebec City. There, she set up a multidisciplinary clinic specializing in obesity management, bringing together nutritionists, kinesiologists and psychologists. Her initiative was prompted by the worrying rise in obesity rates in Canada (over 30 % of the population) and worldwide.
Allurion® balloons are designed for patients with a BMI* of 30 to 40, or between 27 and 30 in the presence of comorbidities**. A prior medical assessment by Dr. Séverine Mazur is required to determine eligibility for treatment.
In cases where BMI is over 40, the balloon may be an alternative for patients who do not wish or do not qualify for bariatric surgery.
This temporary medical device offers a safe, progressive approach to weight loss, accompanied by nutritional and behavioral support.
The Allurion® balloon remains in the stomach for around 16 weeks (4 months) before deflating naturally and being eliminated by the body without surgery.
The Allurion® gastric balloon is a proven non-drug solution for the treatment of obesity, developed to help patients achieve significant weight loss in a less invasive way than bariatric surgery.
This innovative program, created by Dr. Shantanu Gaur and Dr. Ram Chuttani, was launched in the United States in 2016. The concept is simple and requires no surgery. It is based on a miniature balloon, contained in a capsule that the patient swallows during a medical consultation.
Once the capsule has arrived in the stomach, Dr. Séverine Mazur of the CO-ATTITUDE Clinic uses a fine catheter to inflate the balloon with water, as required by the procedure.
The space occupied by the balloon creates a faster feeling of satiety when the patient eats or drinks. This naturally reduces daily caloric intake, helping to achieve significant weight loss within 4 months, under medical supervision.
*BMI (Body Mass Index): BMI is an indicator of corpulence calculated by dividing weight (in kg) by height (in meters) squared. A BMI of 30 or more defines obesity. This index is used to assess a person's level of overweight or obesity.
**Comorbidities refer to the presence of several associated diseases or disorders in the same patient. In the context of obesity, this may include conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension or cardiovascular disease, which increase the risk to overall health. If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Séverine Mazur.
The ball Allurion® is a non-surgical solution for the treatment of obesity, developed by Allurion Technologies, which also owns the brand.
